Course Description

People with aphasia face chronic communication challenges. Augmentative and alternative communication strategies may help people with aphasia achieve participation in desired and important activities. This workshop will begin with a foundation describing the wide range of strategies available and their evidence with an emphasize on how these strategies can be taught to people with aphasia for participation in life. The second part of the session will focus heavily on reading as this area is critically important to participation in today’s society, but is often not addressed in therapy for people with aphasia. Both partner dependent strategies like aphasia friendly formatting and independent strategies that use technology will be presented.

Course Learner outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1) List three strategies for supporting spoken expression by people with aphasia.
